Health Services

Within the Toronto Community

Health services are an essential requirement for those that are braving the elements without the proper resources. Thankfully, there are many services that are available across Toronto and the GTA to assist. It is beneficial that most of these centers do not require proof of a health card as many of the homeless do not carry proper identification that would enable them to access resources at standard health clinics in Toronto. Many of the staff at these centers (nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors, physician assistants), volunteer their time to assist those in need. Unfortunately, due to the difficulty in accessing these resources, partly due to the long wait-times and limited hours, many of those with dire health needs do not seek help right away. They may only seek help once their affliction becomes intolerable, thus requiring advanced and complicated care, which could be a deterrent to those with disorders/ diseases that require continuous and/or complex care.

Though there area quite a few health centers available to the homeless, there is a limit on the number of centers that assist with mental health. With less stigma on mental disorders, not only are more centers beginning to appear, there are more reaching out to utilize this resource. Hopefully more will become available in the future to assist any homeless battling with mental health disorders.

The information on health centres available within the Toronto Community has been compiled from a public website. These health clinics have not been contacted directly for their information, therefore the details listed may not reflect all relevant details as stated by the health centre. Please visit their website or contact the health centre to learn more.
