ShelterS
Within the Toronto Community
There are approximately 47 over-night shelters across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Most are inclusive shelters, however some cater to specific populations and therefore have strict eligibility criteria to admit entrance. Sadly, many turned away at the doors not only based on this eligibility criteria, but most often as a result of the maximum capacity that is reached on a daily basis, leaving them to fend for themselves on the streets.
To understand more about the conditions at a shelter, we performed some research into the testimonies provided by those who have stayed overnight. Though shelters provide warmth and comfort from the harsh environment of the Toronto winters, there is often the question of safety, both personally and for their belongings. With greater resources to be allocated to shelters, the proper security can be provided which will entice those on the streets to willingly search for overnight board thus minimizing the risk of exposure to unsafe weather conditions.
The information on shelters available within the Toronto Community has been compiled from a public website. These shelters have not been contacted directly for their information, therefore the details listed may not reflect all relevant details as stated by the shelter. Please visit their website or contact the shelter to learn more.
